The Rooftop Nursery is a small local nursery facility in Hackney. It was designed by WHAT_architecture and built on a constricted site with an extremely limited budget in tight timescales.Simple, cheap materials were used wherever possible to meet the budget including exposed painted blockwork internally and externally.
The limited space was utilised to its best advantage by a lack of internal walls and the playground was situated on the roof. Sliding partitions divide the interior into 50 potential configurations, and the walls, instead of being covered in expensive linings, were brightly painted. The roof features the UK's first granulated rubber roof so the children can play safely.
The scheme won one of the 14 National RIBA awards in 2007 and was shortlisted for the Prime Ministers Better Public Building Award

Description:
The existing school building was built in the 1930's with steps up to every entrance.
The school has taken the opportunity to review access to the whole school for pupils staff and visitors to comply with Part M of the Building Regulations, and in particular to how access into the Foundation Years area is achieved. We have defined access routes/areas using innovative design and bright primary colours.
We will also be installing playground equipment in January 2009.
