Constructing Excellence Demonstration Project |
|
Friday, 17 August 2007 |
Sandwood’s project at Angela Carter Close has been chosen as a demonstration project for the use of sustainable timber in construction. The row of nine terraced houses is of timber frame construction with prefabricated Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber cassettes. The walls are either rendered or clad with FSC sweet chestnut slats from Cornwall. The percentage of timber from FSC certified sources is expected to be in excess of 95% of the total. This is the second Sandwood FSC project utilising the company’s FSC Chain of Custody Certification procedures and will enable the buildings to be classified as an FSC mixed sources product. Progress from our first project at Boatemah Walk, also in Brixton, has been the addition of FSC kitchens from Symphony Kitchens and the certification of our stair manufacturer (Staircraft) due to the demand for FSC certified timber from Sandwood.
Our aim is to produce 100% FSC certified buildings, with currently only windows, roof trusses and landscaping (fencing) to be resolved. The Angela Carter project demonstrates Sandwood’s continued commitment to the use of sustainable construction materials.
UPDATE:
Angela Carter Close has been chosen as a finalist in Constructing Excellence’s “Legacy Award for Sustainability”, which is awarded for the systematic and sustained application of the principles of sustainable construction and development that deliver a sustainable legacy.

Green Contractor of the Year Nomination |
|
Friday, 17 August 2007 |
Sandwood are delighted to announce that we have been chosen as finalists in the “Green Contractor of the Year” category of the Construction News Green Awards 2007 for our proactive approach to improving our environmental performance and spreading the green message to our clients and suppliers. We are particularly pleased to represent the SME and social housing sectors as the other finalists (Skanska, Amec, Robert McAlpine and David McLean) are considered heavyweights of the industry. It is hoped that the real achievements of Sandwood in becoming a specialist in sustainability within the social housing sector will be recognised.

More Awards for Sandwood Construction |
|
Tuesday, 10 July 2007 |
The Rooftop Nursery in Ottaway Street, Hackney has won both a RIBA 2007 National Award and a Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award.
Designed by WHAT architecture and built by Sandwood Construction, the scheme was constricted by a limited budget and a tight urban site. The cheapest materials available were used, with the structure being made of concrete blocks. The limited space was utilised to its best advantage by a lack of internal fixed walls and a playground on the roof. Sliding partitions divide the interior into 50 potential configurations. Instead of using expensive linings, the internal walls were brightly painted. The roof features the UK’s first granulated rubber roof so children can play safely. The scheme, completed in 2005, provides a functional, inventive and cheerful solution to the problem of inner-city childcare.
The RIBA award is one of only 14 awarded this year, and Sandwood gained a PM award as one of the 18 shortlisted projects. For a £330,000 project to win not one but two prestigious awards is a major achievement.
